I know that most people believe that Disney World is the happiest place on Earth. Personally, I believe that those people have never been to Nickel City Con! If they had, they would certainly know that NCC trumps Disney by a landslide! To make the adventure even sweeter, you can actually experience it FOR FREE.
Those lucky enough to volunteer during the Con, get in free for the days that they complete a volunteer assignment. In exchange for four hours of work, volunteers receive a t-shirt, lunch/dinner during breaks, and two 3-day passes to the con! That’s nothing to toss a lightsaber at.
So here are a few pointers, if you want to volunteer, to remember:
1. Arrive early to start your volunteer assignment on each day.
If you rely on your volunteer pass as admission to the wonderful world of NCC, get there early. But trust me when I say that you WILL NOT be the only one getting in this way. Plan on being at least 15 minutes early to your scheduled shift start time each day. Just like at a new job, being punctual is a great first impression to make!
2. Don’t be afraid to volunteer by yourself
If you are going with a group of friends, and you are all volunteering, that’s cool…and awesome, really. But just because you are all together doesn’t mean you have to all volunteer together. Volunteer assignments happen in groups, so there will be others placed with you for a task. Don’t be afraid to talk to the people around you. One of the most awesome parts of NCC is getting to meet people that are just like you! You get to meet great, nerdy, geeky, pop-cultured people. You thought there wasn’t a DC Comics fan out there as devoted and awestruck as you are? That you were the only one who has watched every episode of Stranger Things 30 times? Or, maybe you think you are the only one who could love Jon Heder with every ounce of your soul? You’d be wrong. And odds are you’ll find someone who shares at least ONE of your obsessions!
3. Do not leave your belongings unattended.
Do not, under ANY circumstances, leave your stuff unattended. While we know there will be plenty of superheroes around, there are always a few supervillains nearby who would snatch your autographed JDF PoP! figure and never be seen again. Give it to your family or friends to keep, or take it with you, but don’t leave it behind in a corner or on a table somewhere.
4. Don’t be dissapointed if you get a less than stellar assignment.
This one is probably the most important rule of all. You may not get the assignment you were hoping for but either way it goes, just enjoy it and make it fun! A fun note to keep in mind though is the more years that you volunteer, the better your jobs get and you build trust and a reputation. Each year you return as a volunteer, you move up in the ranks. You just never know!
Volunteering is a great experience, and I would encourage anybody who attends NCC to try volunteering at least once. Our volunteers are passionate unpaid people who donate their time to making Nickel City Con a great experience for our attendees, guests, and each other! We hope you will consider joining us this year – fill out a form here or email Robert at [email protected].
